Oliver Reed - Aspel & Company
The government and health groups are somewhat over-reacting to the serge of ‘binge drinking’ that is apparently on the increase and destroying our society…
The benchmark has been set many years ago between 1948 and 1999 when a character called Oliver Reed used to roam this land. The strapping ex-amateur boxer became the high hopes of the British film and theatre industry in 1966 at just 18 but his acting career saw more action than going twelve rounds with Mike Tyson on speed
Whether smashing up a pub in Munich for not adorning it with Union Flags and images of the monarch, being dragged naked from a fish tank in a LA restaraunt by police shouting “You can’t arrest me! I’m one of the four muskateers!” or spiking the child actors drinks with vodka on the set of “Oliver Twist” he was always maintained a proud British institution of alcohol abuse
He died in 1999 after a certain quiet weekends drinking consisting of 2 bottles of rum, a keg of guinness, numerous bottles of beer (and a shammi kebab with mint yogurt…. probably)
The footage above is from one of his most memorable appearances on national television, the 80s chat show “Aspel & Company”. Watch and be filled with national pride
